There are only a few weeks left until the World Symposium on Choral Music 2023, one of the most significant choral events in the world, takes place in Istanbul - six years after the last WSCM in Barcelona! Over six days, 55 choirs and 52 presenters from 28 countries will be featured in 11 performance venues on Taksim Square and Istiklal Street, one of the most famous neighbourhoods in Istanbul.

IFCM has organized five international choral composition competitions since this project was created in 2010. The aim of these competitions is to promote the creation and distribution of new, innovative, and accessible choral repertoire. IFCM announces its sixth International Competition for Choral Composition to promote new works in choral music and to encourage innovation in choral writing which fits the needs of a 21st-century choir. We are looking for compositions that combine originality, imagination, and creativity within the context of contemporary global themes.

The World Youth Choir (WYC) is an international ensemble of outstanding young choral singers from all over the world. Established in 1989, WYC brings together remarkable young talents for a rehearsal session and a tour in different countries. This year, an alumni session will take place in Croatia, Slovenia, and Hungary from the 3-12 June 2023. Thirty WYC alumni singers will gather for a rehearsal session in Grožnjan (Croatia) and will perform in Croatia, Slovenia, and Hungary.

Our original plans for the March IFCMeNEWS were quite different until life was interrupted suddenly and dramatically by two unfortunate earthquakes about 1000 km from İstanbul. More than 40,000 voices were muted under the rubble, and hundreds of thousands were left homeless. Having served as a historical bridge between various religious, culinary, and musical traditions for thousands of years, Antioch was almost completely erased from maps. We maintained high hopes throughout the retrieval process and cried out of joy with each miraculous rescue. We are deeply touched by the Mexican rescue dog Proteo dying on duty. All the world embraced our pain. We are grateful for the local and international aid, and we pray for all the victims of the devastating disaster.

IFCM is deeply saddened about the passing of our long-time friend Ricardo Denegri in La Plata, Argentina, on 4 March 2023, at the age of 78. Thirty years ago, Ricardo founded the Sociedad de los Encuentros Corales and, together with his friend and colleague Oscar Escalada, created the Argentine Association for Choral Music (AAMCANT) and the Festival America Cantat.
