Obituary: Dr. Ron Smart, Australia

The Australian National Choral Association was very sad to hear of the passing of Dr Ron Smart. "Among his many significant achievements was his role in bringing the 1996 World Symposium on Choral Music to Sydney. This was a major event for Australian choral music, bringing the international choral community to Australia and leaving a lasting legacy. Many who attended still remember the Sydney Symposium as a landmark occasion. The International Federation for Choral Music has recognised Ron’s enormous contribution, both to the Sydney Symposium and to the Federation itself. His influence on the Australian and international choral communities will be long remembered." The IFCM Board and President extend their deepest condolences to his wife, Janette, his family, and the whole Australian choral community.

New IFCM Membership Category for Students and Young People under the Age of 25
Published: May 30,2025
The YOUNG IFCM Committee proposed the creation of a new student membership category to the IFCM Committee responsible for membership. The proposal was examined carefully, and an appropriate amount for this new category was discussed and approved by the IFCM board. IFCM hopes that this new fee will increase membership accessibility for the younger generation.

The World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM) 2026 – “Reimagining the Future” – held in Macau, China has come to a successful conclusion. WSCM 2026 featured 12 invited choirs and eight ‘World Voices’ participating choirs, 58 invited presenters, a total of 700 participants and distinguished guests from 48 countries.
